I don’t mean giving back as most people mean it. I still do that but what I mean is giving back to my personal community.
In the last few years I’ve had a lot of people pouring a lot of good energy into me. They’ve helped guide me through tough times and they have helped give me the freedom I needed to learn how to live a different life with different skills. It takes a lot to go from public service to business and marketing, and my community has poured energy into allowing me to make that journey.
So, when I say, “giving back”, here I mean to my personal community and the broader business and marketing community that has helped me so much.
How am I going to do that? Well… I don’t know yet. At least, not specifically. But, it starts with showing up and giving what you can to what people really need.
In the last year, I’ve changed the structure and focus of our business significantly. While I was working on those changes, I almost completely stopped taking new clients. I would take referrals from friends or help out businesses I believed in but other than that, I sent most potential clients to friends in the industry.
Now that I have the structure I want and what I believe to be the best digital marketing offerings in the industry, we’re ready to start growing this year.
Business growth takes a lot of time and energy. This is where most of my energy is currently going.
Side Project (History)
A few months ago, I was videoing an interview with a local man. Instead of jumping into the interview, he spent the first 20 minutes telling stories about life in my home town, stories from decades before I was born.
There were other people waiting to be filmed and I just let them wait while I listened to the history of our area.
It struck me just how special that moment was and how much oral history disappears every year.
I’m working on recording videos of our history. Probably mostly local history but maybe some from everywhere. One of my goals right now is to actively look and find more stories around me.
